This month we will be reading 1 and 2 Samuel. This will be longer than anything we have read previously, but we believe you will find these books an easy read and so gripping that you won’t want to stop. Originally written as one book, 1 and 2 Samuel read much like a novel with the story telling, characters, and plots they contain. Check out the 1 and 2 Samuel videos from Bible Project by clicking on the video links below. Join us as we learn from the rise and fall of Israel’s first two kings…

Prayer Points: As you read James this month you will notice that it is a letter focused on action, not just words. James gives us many, both positive and negative, statements imploring us to either be or not be, do or not do, say or not say, etc.
So, as you read each chapter each week, take time to notice the various things James addresses and stop and pray and ask God to evaluate you on whether you are living the way that He is calling you to live.
Finally, ask Him to empower you by His Spirit and grace to live out your faith in a righteous, God-glorifying way.

As we take time to reflect on our independence as a nation in July, we will dive into Exodus to see how God delivered Israel from Egyptian captivity to gain their independence. Beyond that, we will see how God continually provided, yet how Israel continually doubted and turned away from God. Through all of it, we will see how God remained faithful and true to His word.

June

In the month of June we will be diving into 1 Peter and 2 Peter. Take a look at the short video links below to learn more about the books we will be reading this month!

June 1-4

1 Peter 1

Prayer Points: Take time to reflect on the greatness of God’s gift of salvation in all of its aspects and then ask him to help you be sober minded (1:13-15) and holy as a result of His gift.

June 5-11

1 Peter 2-3

Prayer Points: Ask God to help grow a hunger for His Word (2:2) and pray for all the various relationships you have, whether with those in authority (2:13-14), other Christians (2:9), unbelievers (2:12), or your spouse (3:1-8). Pray that in all of them you might be an example of Christ following in his steps (2:21-25).
Pray that God would always keep you ready, each day, to be a witness for Christ with an attitude of gentleness and respect. Also, to take advantage of the opportunities you have to be a witness (3:15-16).

June 12-18

1 Peter 4-5

Prayer Points: Pray for sound judgment in these days we live in (4:7) and pray for grace this week to keep fervent in love for each other (4:8).
Ask God to help you cast aside those things that are causing anxiety in your life, trusting His word to you that He cares for you and will carry your burdens for you (5:6-7).

June 19-25

2 Peter 1-2

Prayer Points: Ask God to search you and show you what things He has given you, so that you may begin to or better take hold of them by faith to live a life pleasing to Him. Ask God to help you give attention to the list of virtues that you might add them to your faith (1:5-9).
Pray about discernment of false teachers and false teachings. Pray God helps you spot them and avoid them. Pray that God fills you with a love for His truth as well as a love for people who might have embraced false teaching, that God might use you to help them come out of it.

June 26-30

2 Peter 3

Prayer Points:
Pray that God would help you not lose sight of His promised return as the days are growing worse and worse. Pray that God helps you set your hope on this promise that your faith may be strengthened and you may be found ready (3:3-14).

May

This month we will head to the Old Testament and read the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.
Our goal with this is to help bring cohesion and understanding of the Scriptures to us. Ezra and Nehemiah are both placed in the post-exile period of Israel’s history. Israel has come back to Jerusalem from being in captivity in Babylon. Ezra leads the people into restoring the temple and worship, while Nehemiah leads the people in restoring the city of Jerusalem, the center of God’s Kingdom on Earth at the time.
In many ways all these books parallel the church. Israel was largely ignorant of the Law and had to re-learn God’s word and how to worship. And so it is with the Church today. We come to faith in God and begin to learn God’s Word and how to worship and grow in His Word (like a newborn babe according to 1 Peter 2:2)  . Nehemiah also parallels the church in showing the need not only to worship but to work and fight. “The sword and the trowel” (Nehemiah 4:15-20) has been a favorite parallel for missionaries for centuries. So for the Church we are to be about building the kingdom of God while also engaging in spiritual battle constantly.
The minor prophets Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi all preached to Israel during this period and served an important role. As with the church today, so it was then with Israel; many things can distract us and pull us away from the priority of worship, from the battle we are engaged in spiritually, and from seeking God’s kingdom first. Today, we need N.T. saints with the gift of prophecy (forth-telling here, not foretelling) to keep calling the Church back to the Word. By putting God’s word before the people they motivate us, move us, and keep us focused on what is priority in this life. Meanwhile, people like Ezra and Nehemiah take up leadership roles in leading, teaching, mobilizing and discipling the saints.

May 1-7

1: Ezra 1-2
2: Ezra 3-4
3: Haggai 1-2
4: Zechariah 1-2
5: Zechariah 3-4
6: Zechariah 5-6
7: Zechariah 7-8
Prayer Points: What in your life is distracting you from worship? Pray that God helps identify those things in your life that are prioritized over worship and His kingdom, and begin to seek first His kingdom and worship Him.

May 8-14

8: Zechariah 9-10
9: Zechariah 11-12
10: Zechariah 13-14
11: Ezra 5-6
12: Ezra 7-8
13: Ezra 9
14: Ezra 10
Prayer Points: Often in the Christian life there are periods of refinement and confession, as was the case in Ezra 10. Pray for God to help you confess and turn from those things that hinder you from walking with God, whether sinful or things that are good in and of themselves but have been given priority over your walk with God.

May 15-21

15: Nehemiah 1
16: Nehemiah 2
17: Nehemiah 3
18: Nehemiah 4
19: Nehemiah 5
20: Nehemiah 6
21: Nehemiah 7
Prayer Points: Pray that God gives you a burden to work for His kingdom, similar to that found in Nehemiah. Pray also that He gives you discernment to recognize those situations, people, or things that threaten to stop you from putting your hand to the work.

May 22-28

22: Nehemiah 8
23: Nehemiah 9
24: Nehemiah 10
25: Nehemiah 11
26: Nehemiah 12
27: Malachi 1
28: Malachi 2
Prayer Points: Pray that as worship and working for God's kingdom takes priority in your life and in our church, that God would make your joy full.

May 29-31

29: Malachi 3
30: Malachi 4
31: Nehemiah 13

Prayer Points: Pray that God also helps you by His grace to fulfill your obligations in the Gospel (c.f. Nehemiah 10-13) so that the body might be built up and the Kingdom of God would expand.

April

In April, we will be reading through Philippians. Philippians is a letter written from the Apostle Paul to Christians living in Philippi, a Roman colony in modern day Greece. It was written around A.D. 62 and was meant to encourage the believers in their faith as they sought to spread the Gospel and live as Jesus lived.

April 3-9: Philippians 1

Prayer Points: Thankful for our local body of believers; pray that “your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment” (v.9) as you minister to our body and others.

April 10-16: Philippians 2

Prayer Points: Pray for humility; pray that God would empower you by his grace to have the mind of Christ (v.5) so that you “look not only to your own interests but the interests of others” as you go through your day (v.4).

April 17-23: Philippians 3

Prayer Points: Pray for faith and perseverance; pray that God shows you where you might be “putting confidence in your own flesh” (v.4), and that you would count all those things you are putting your confidence in before Christ, as “rubbish” so that you might fully gain and rest in Christs perfect righteousness each day this week (vv.8-9).

April 24-30: Philippians 4

Prayer Points: Pray through verses 4-9, that they would be true in your life; pray for contentment and trust that God will supply your needs. For those struggling with anxiety, (v.6) confess those things that you are trying to carry on your own and not casting upon him to carry for you (c.f 1 Peter 5:7). Make a habit of repenting of this and bringing these issues to him in prayer and supplication and with thanksgiving. He desires to carry your cares for you when you give them to Him (v.6)!
